| Pollok Park Heritage and Wildlife Walk 1st June 2008 | |
|
A walk led by some supporters of Save Pollok Park that
took place on Sunday 1st June 2008.
It started at the ponds on North Drive and took in the ancient ringworks (original castle of Petrus Polloc ?), North Wood and Rhododendron Walk, the Lime Avenue and showed the sites of the other two previous castle homes of the Maxwell family before Pollok House was built. The changes around Pollok House were also be illustrated. Do you know where the ice house and curling rink are - and the location of a whole village called 'Polloktoune' cleared in the 18th as it spoiled the view?
Guides included Beth Murphy, previously of the Parks Dept who knows all about the trees and rhododendron species (1000 types) brought in by the Maxwells, Gordon Hanley who is a bird and other wildlife expert, Karin Spalter of Cart Blanche and Pollokshields Heritage, and Bob Marshall |
